The Circus roundabout in downtown Basseterre

As a small volcanic  island in the Eastern Caribbean, St. Kitts offers 69 sq. miles of rain forest, mountains and beaches to explore.  With  scenery so lush and varied, the most engaging way to explore this lovely island  is by bike.  Most  St. Kitts resorts offer bike tours and I quickly signed up for the two-hour tour of Basseterre, the charming capitol of St. Kitts, at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort.

I’m an avid biker but I must admit, I wasn’t prepared to tackle the hilly terrain of St. Kitts.  From the blazing 90 degree heat, to the steep hills scattered throughout the island, I obtained a strenuous workout before I even arrived in downtown Basseterre.  If you’re not up to a serious cardio session, I’d recommend a tour that starts in Basseterre, which has few hills, in the cool evening hours.  Biking through Basseterre supplies a colorful backdrop of 18th century Georgian architecture, an outdoor market teaming with unusual tropical fruit and friendly Kittitians waving at every turn.  My favorite  part is the Circus, a roundabout in the center of the town.  Modeled after London’s Piccadilly Circus, St. Kitts British colonial influence is prominently displayed with the ornate, bronze, Berkeley Memorial Clock.  Top off your biking experience with a visit to the legendary Mr. X’s Shiggedy Shack.  Located on the beach, dig your feet in the sand while savoring freshly caught Caribbean lobster or melted lava jerk chicken.  Don’t miss the bonfire and live fire show on Thursdays.
