There’s nothing funny about the brutal Chicago winter, unless you’re inside and watching the Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival. For two weeks, from January 7-17, 100 local comedy troupes will help defrost the weather or at least the stiff attitudes that go with it. As the home to Second City, Chicago comedy is legendary for its biting social commentary and this festival is a great way to witness the singular art form. Headquartered at the Theatre Building Chicago in the vibrant Lakeview neighborhood, the Chicago Sketch Fest offers an exciting way to experience an authentic slice of Chicago.
Not to be confused with improvisation, sketch comedy features original scripted material grounded in satire and performed in short time spurts. Sketch comedy was born in Chicago during the 50s and continues to evolve. Catch the Ferrel Chihuahuas, a group that supplies multimedia shows complete with sound effects, music, elaborate costumes and lots and lots of wigs. Kids can join in the fun during Sketch Days For Kids on January 9-16. Don’t miss the noted Chicago children’s ensemble, Barrel of Monkeys. Tickets for each time slot are $12.50 , which are 35-40 minutes long. Top off your comedy adventure with a feast at Lakeview landmark eatery, Deleece. With exposed brick walls, a tin roof and velvet drapes Deleece gives off the homey vibe of the neighborhood hangout that it is.
