Chicago is noted for its pizza and hot dogs but the Windy City also claims a particular cheesecake style. A Chicago hallmark, Eli’s cheesecake offers Chicago style cheesecake baked with a high crust, firm on the outside, creamy in the middle. Always fresh and fluffy, Eli’s cheesecake contains only natural ingredients and is certified kosher. Although the famous Eli’s, the Place For Steak, where the cheesecake was created, closed in 2005, Eli’s cheesecake is sold in stores in all 50 states and Mexico. You’ll find Eli’s served in many Chicago restaurants and cafes but for the ultimate experience, you must take a tour of the bakery.
Eli’s Cheesecake Experience is a 40 minute, $3 tour that ends with a creamy slice of cheesecake. Visitors stroll down winding hallways and witness the cakes being made, including chocolate chip, candy bar, made with Heath’s toffee bars and my fave, turtle trio, whipped up with Caramel and pecans. You’ll learn about Eli’s history, philosophy and get to observe the impressive decorating department at work. Pay attention to the info because the guide will ask trivia questions and the right answers are rewarded with more cheesecake. There’s also a weekend Eli’s Tasting and Traditions tour, that’s free but doesn’t include a bakery tour. You can never eat too much cheesecake, so end your tour at the Eli’s Cheesecake Cafe. Sample soup, artisan sandwiches and gourmet salad and then treat yourself to more cheesecake.
